Splitting is for taking one PDF and turning it into two or more smaller documents. A few situations where that is exactly what you need: a scanner with a document feeder has bundled a whole stack of paperwork into a single file and each record needs to be filed on its own. A 200 page report is too big to email and needs to go out as chapters. A signed contract packet contains three agreements that belong in three different folders.
Once your pages are picked, you choose how to save. "One PDF" combines the selection into a single document, ideal for pulling a chapter out of a manual. "Two PDFs" divides the document in two, with your selection in the first file and everything else in the second, which splits a document in half in a single pass. "Separate PDFs" turns each selected page into its own file, perfect for breaking batch scans into individual records.
Selections do not need to be consecutive. Grab pages 2, 7, and 15 if that is what the job calls for. In "Separate PDFs" mode the files arrive together in one ZIP, in "Two PDFs" mode each file gets its own download button, and every output is named after your original document so your downloads folder stays organized.
Like every PDFGadget tool, the processing happens on your own device. Your PDF is never transmitted to a server, which matters when you are dividing up contracts, medical records, or financial statements. What is the difference between the One PDF and Separate PDFs modes?
One PDF combines all of your selected pages into a single new document, which is useful for pulling a chapter or section out of a larger file. Separate PDFs saves each selected page as its own individual file and delivers them together in a ZIP, which is useful for dividing batch scans into individual records.
How do I split a PDF into two files?
Select the pages that belong in the first file, either by clicking them or typing a range like 1-10, then choose "Two PDFs" and split. Your selection becomes PDF 1 and every remaining page becomes PDF 2, each with its own download button, so a 20 page document splits in half in a single pass.
Can I split every page of a PDF into its own file?
Yes. Click Select All, choose "Separate PDFs", and click the split button. Every page becomes its own PDF and the files download together as a single ZIP archive.
Do the pages I split have to be consecutive?
No. You can click any mix of pages, such as 2, 5, and 9, or type them into the page range box like 2, 5, 9-12 and hit Apply. The thumbnail grid shows a green checkmark on each selected page so you always know exactly what will be included.
Can I split a password protected PDF?
Only if the PDF opens without asking for a password. If your file requires a password to open, unlock it in your PDF reader first, save an unprotected copy, and split that copy instead.
Does splitting reduce quality or change my original file?
No. Pages are copied into the new files exactly as they are, with no recompression and no changes to fonts, images, or layout. Your original PDF stays on your device, completely untouched.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server when I split it?
No. The splitting runs on your own device using JavaScript in your browser. Once the page has loaded you can even disconnect from the internet and the tool keeps working, which is easy proof that nothing is being sent anywhere.
